After asking around a bit the group soon located the Salt Works where the mercenaries were being held. Time for a bit of reconnaissance and to check out the guards. Percy and Erik set off to gather information in the local area, while Pellius and Terhil set themselves up to watch the location.
It turned out that the Sallix Salt Works had only recently been acquired by house Thrune after the owner was killed while resisting arrest. The building was now being ‘managed’ by a Dwarven Mercenary called Kossrani, who seemed to be running a black market operation in salt on the side. Observations showed that there were two shifts of four guards with Kossrani supporting the Day shift. After a long protracted discussion on the best approach it was finally decided. Go at night, kick in the door and deal with the guards swiftly and silently without raising the alarm to the others sleeping. Get the prisoners out and then return to base, easy right?
To be fair the first part of the plan unfolded with flawless precision, The door opened, Terhil rushed in, Pellius dealt with the guard closest to the door and Erik and Percy followed up behind. It looked like the guards had just been relaxing and playing cards, unfortunately one of them sprinted out the back heading towards their sleeping allies. With Terhil in pursuit the guard was stopped from reaching the back door of the Saltworks, but he had been shouting the whole time. As Pellius dropped the last guard the rest of the party waited with bated breath, surely their luck could hold out and they could make a clean getaway.
Despite a whispered request to Desna, their luck didn’t hold and seconds later the door burst open and another guard rushed in. With Pellius and Terhil straddling the door, the hapless guard didn’t stand a chance and was soon unconscious and bleeding. That just left the dwarf and another three guard to deal with.
Percy stepped forward and a rainbow of colours flashed out from his palm, two more of the guards dropped. Only one left now, and the dwarf.. With that Kossrani entered the fray fully, wielding his heavy mace with expert precision. Even when disarmed by Terhil he simply slammed his shield into Pellius and calmly picked up his weapon. The tide of the battle had turned, and not in a good way.
Backed up by his sole remaining guard Kossrani waded into the room. Another blow to Pellius dropped him and the dwarf turned his attention to Terhil. Backed up by Erik the exiled noble franticly fought the viscous dwarf, silently praying to all the gods for some aid, but they were silent in their response. The dwarf continued to fight, resisting all the spells Percy threw at him. Terhil desperately dodging his attacks. Then one of the blows reached home and Terhil dropped to the ground. Erik quickly knelt down healing energy closing Terhils wounds as the Dwarven mercenary now looked at the young Noble, murder in his eyes.
Meanwhile the remaining guard focused his efforts on Percy, and soon there another member of the party down. With Terhil fighting from the ground and only Erik on his feet it was looking like the silver ravens would soon be the dead ravens. Finally Terhill managed to get through the dwarfs defences, his sword slicing through his stomach. Kossrani looked down, a look of shock on his face before he slumped to the ground, dead.
At the sight of his captain’s body the remaining guard threw down his weapon, crying for mercy. With that the fight was over. Erik and Terhil looked over at Pellius’s body in the corner, knowing the truth even as they moved towards it. The rescue had been a success but at what cost to the Silver Ravens. One of their own, slaughtered in the name of freedom. Barzillai now had even more to answer for…
